Anne: Your babies look great! Just about every baby farm animal I've seen is incredibly cute, but goats are particularly cool, they're so...miniature-looking and totally feisty and nimble once they get going.

Mrs. K: Delighted! :)

Jeane: For sure, you're right, it's not THAT magical, the snow doesn't just melt like there's a heater in there. You fill, wait, the water refreezes overnight if it gets really cold, refill with snow, wait, etc, until you get enough volume of warmed up water that only the top freezes on a cold night, and new snow melts really quickly. It's soothing in a mildly chopping wood or double-digging your garden kinda way... If I really needed lots of water, I'd have the hose out, just do the dragging work. But for the next couple of weeks, I can get by with the snow-in-barrel-method. There's lots of build-up right outside the greenhouse door, so I don't have far to haul... Therapeutic?! :)

Just stumble on your blog. Love it! I'm doing the same thing. Although I'm beginning to think hauling buckets of snow into the greenhouse is just as hard as hauling out hoses would be. But it works. And my plants don't seem to mind. Looks like it finally might be hinting at spring here. 40F and sun this weekend!

Hey - we have that same blue cistern in our back yard! We drilled a hole at the bottom to add a spigot so we can spread it out with a hose.

What a great idea. We don't usually get any snow here. Except this year. We've had three spring snow showers. Here in the morning - completely gone tomorrow. And we have babies! Read about it here: http://muleshoefarm.blogspot.com/2008_03_13_archive.html

As the saying goes, "By guess and by God"

So sensible using the snow, the hoses are also far more difficult to use in the cold as they will have stiffened.
