Having found the mapping requirement for organic certification a little cumbersome I found this online farm mapping tool pretty effective. You can make custom maps down to the detail of a back yard. It creates a neat table of measurements and correctly and to scale prints out custom scale maps of your land and crops.

There are some other tools out there to generate soil and aerial maps. It doesn't have the field creation like the above post, but if you are considering a property or something like that to grow on, it could be helpful.

The main one is Web Soil Survey. It's not too complicated to use once you know your section, township, and range.

Just thought I'd chime in with that. :)
