water, watering, cistern, collecting water, irrigation,

Hello, I'm new to this site (10 mins) I want to see if there are any folk out there that can provide any advice on collecting rain and snow melt in a cistern. We just purchased a home on 2.2 acres in Eaton, CO. We plan to start a large garden (or tiny farm) including some small livestock, etc. My wife has some knack for gardening and the whole family is looking forward to learning and working together. Any way, we are interested in installing a system that can collect rain and snow melt throughout the year and using this water to irrigate the garden. We're total neophytes at this. We're assuming we need some sort of panels or roofing on some or all the house or other buildings to channel the rain/snow melt into piping that drains into a cistern. Then we'll need a pump to pump the water out to be used on a drip system or something like that. Any advice or recommended resources is much appreciated.

I think the most common design is placing an oak or plastic barrel underneath the drain piping for the rain gutters. Something along the lines of

Here is a link to a pretty informative Colorado extension office site that covers greywater and rainwater reuse.
