winter rye

    just reading around the 'net, and see lots of cautions about winter rye being hard to kill off in the spring. mike, i see you used it last year, and are planning again this year. any tips on dealing with it in the spring? the mrs. just seeded our garden lastnight.

    I have not had any problems killing off the Rye in the Spring. I have written about it here;

    Micah, I was just browsing the post on your website considering growing hairy vetch as a cover crop. I would recommend using a combo of vetch and rye rather than just vetch. Hairy vetch gets very matted and tangled, it is a nightmare to incorporate on its own. Grown with rye, the vetch can climb in the early season,making it easier to incorporate. A lot of farmers find the combo of oats and vetch even easier to work with.
