50 Things I’ve Learned from Tiny Farming

This 50 Things idea has been kicking around for years now, started by me for fun. The numbering is random, there’s no particular order. The rough list has over 50 items at the moment. I’ll post more as I write ‘em up! Use at your own discretion… :)

  1. make a map
  2. measure, count,
  3. use lots of arithmetic
  4. taste everything, all the time
  5. eating dirt won’t kill you, or even make you sick (it may even do you good)
  6. row cover really works
  7. wheel hoes really work
  8. remain calm
  9. don’t walk/run/jump/drive on wet, waterlogged soil
  10. cool, cloudy fall days make the best fieldwork weather
  11. it’s all about the weather
  12. it’s all about people
  13. plants just want to grow
  14. it’s mostly all easy and common sense (so don’t overthink)
  15. tomatoes are a puzzle
  16. partnerships are tricky (probably, avoid)
  17. people like instructions with their food
  18. money isn’t everything
  19. don’t let bean-picking get you down
  20. eat local
  21. wear rubber boots often
  22. you don’t have to drive
  23. you don’t NEED to own land
  24. keep a blog
  25. rows don’t have to be straight (sometimes, though, that helps)
  26. it’s FUN
  27. garlic and olive oil are all you need (well, salt, pepper, and hot sauce, too)
  28. let people do their thing (as quickly as possible)
  29. CSA is a little miracle
  30. Buy two (or three)

  32. Spare parts are golden (buy 2, or 3)
  33. Borrow it, then buy it
  34. Keep a notebook (use sparingly)
  35. Use waterproof ink for when you accidently soak your notebook

  44. There’s always the perfect tool for the job, and not always the same tool for the similar job

  49. Take it slow (done well, it looks like lazy…but it’s not)
  50. Learn to thin
  • Be a little ruthless with seedlings

  • Cooling is easy – refrigeration is about long hauls…
  • Eat everything you grow, all the time

  • Tiny farming has its place – “There’s a world to feed…” and it takes a lot of farmers to feed it
  • Everyone’s a farmer – some of my most useful and fun conversations with “home gardeners” who’ve been growing veggies for years
