Drip, drip, drip

February: snow vanishing again

This isn’t really winter. No-one around here has seen anything like this weather before. February around here means knee-deep in snow drifts. Deep freeze. Instead, it’s been…raining. The strange, roughly weekly cycle continues: a few days of cold and snow, then up goes the temperature again. Can’t say it is having a huge effect on me, though, because I’ve been mostly holed up for the last month. Soul searching, re-examining my life in tiny farming. Trying to put things in perspective… Well, not exactly. :) I’d love to do all that stuff (although it also sounds a little depressing), but I’m not really wired that way. How do you search your soul, I mean…where IS IT? Been reading a lot, and…online. Splitting wood and building fires when it does get cold enough. Gearing up for the new growing season by chilling out a bit now. Watching the weather…

  1. Sorry, I forget, what zone are you in? Could you put that somewhere memorable or up front on your blog?

I’m in MN zone 4b or 5a!!! depending upon which map you consult this last few. It’s been unheard of weather here. I grew up in zone 3a which is now 3b and my family’s trees are stressed.

And my soul is located in my big toe, but I can only access it while soaking in a hot bath. ;) Lots of wisdom there, more when I walk or work my body, I come inside with answers in my head and things gel for me then.

  2. Way down here in zone 8b/9, the jet stream has been pulling wind straight from South America. The air conditioner is currently running. It’s the warmest, wettest winter I’ve ever seen.

  3. Ya, I’m east of you in Ottawa and we live right by the Rideau canal where you can generally skate for 7km from the end of January through March, but this year the canal has been opening and closing with the back and forth between cold and warm weather.

I’m guessing the little lakes around you aren’t all fit for skating much these days?

  4. We’re feeling the same thing down here in Southern Ontario. I’m not sure how it’s going to play out in the spring, the ground is super saturated with no snow cover at all so far. I guess there’s nothing to do really besides wait and see.

  5. Really like your website. However, the format change has made it more difficult for me to navigate. The old format was easier for me. Also, there is some kind of “share” tab protruding from the left margin into the pages that is annoying. Know progress is supposed to be good, so maybe I can figure out how to get the full benefit of these format changes soon.

    • Yeah, I vaguely remember that Share tab. It’s long gone now. I’ve tried to keep the site as simple as possible over the while. In any direction, I think there’s a common sense limit beyond which “more progress” isn’t really progress any more. :)

  6. I can see were your coming from – not into soul searching much myself. I’m more of an organiser, and getting together a massive wood pile for the coming winter puts life into perspective for me.

  7. we have had such a mild winter so far that I keep looking at my tiller and thinking maybe… But on the other hand I am afraid that winter will make it appearance in march and kick our rears. At any rate to appease my desire to start gardening I am going to make an insulated plant incubator in my garage this weekend. At least I’m going to start on it. I am sick of paying full price for plants and am determined to raise my own. Love you blog. Hang in there, spring is coming.

  8. Seems like the US is getting the UK’s weather.

    Rainy winters, rather than snow.

Just wait for summer, cold, windy, wet. I bet you can’t moan as much as us about it!

  9. I agree- the weather’s been worrisome, but at least we’re finally getting some wet, even if it’s in the wrong form. The farmers here (Nebraska) have a saying: Summer follows Winter. A dry winter was leading to predictions of a dry summer too. Now at least the ground is wet, though, if the exact pattern holds, it’ll be drought up until harvest time, at which point what little survived will mold! I have no choice but to laugh at that. I couldn’t move forward with starting stuff for the year if I tried to be a meterologist- I’d second guess myself into a stand still.

  10. Best wishes in your reflections. It is always hard at this time of the year when winter is sort of over and spring has not yet arrived.

  12. The re-unification of Germany arrived in 1990 with the fall of the Berlin Wall and normalcy of
a ‘re-combined’ Germany was established through the commitment to Berlin as the capital and an easing
of two cultures which had been largely independent of each other since the creation of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
The official language is German and the capital is Berlin. MG Urquhart did
not expect this heavy resistance and was surprised by the presence of the SS Panzer Corps.

  13. I do consider all of the ideas you have offered on your post.

They are really convincing and will certainly
work. Still, the posts are too brief for novices. Could you please
extend them a bit from subsequent time? Thanks
    for the post.
